Setting:

In terms of setting, the world of Tekken takes place on Earth as we know it in more contemporary times. Though to some extent the game displays technology you wouldn’t normally come across and supernatural beings, but that has more to do with the fictitious factions set in place. Otherwise America is America, Britain is Britain, Japan is Japan and so on and so forth. It takes place on Earth in modern times—though one might suspect it take place on another planet due to the gravity defying stunts, but that’s what fighting games are all about.

One thing to be noted is that every character has their own storyline, creating multiple possibilities and multiple endings to the game. I will be following Asuka’s personal story line while drawing from other story lines as material.

How is the Tekken Universe Different from Earth?

In spite of the similarities between Tekken’s Earth and Earth as we know it, there are a few defining features that make the setting in Tekken unique.

- Mishima Zaibatsu/Tekken Zaibatsu: The Tekken Zaibatsu was originally created and named by the oldest known member of the Mishima clan and the original carrier of the Devil Gene, Jinpachi Mishima. He lost the Tekken Zaibatsu to his son Heihachi Mishima who then named it the Mishima Zaibatsu. The Mishima Zaibatsu is an Empire drenched in wealth with its own army and industry, it is also the company that sponsors the King of Iron Fist Tournament, the fighting tournament which is the foundation of the Tekken series.

- Tekken Force: Heihachi’s personal army, on the outside they appear to be a benign force, assigned mediate battles and make peace around the world, but this belies Heihachi’s true intention which is to become the ruler of the world. The ranks in the army from lowest to highest are as follows: Crow, Falcon, Hawk, and Owl. If Anna and Nina Williams are anything to go by, the Tekken force members may also act as spies and assassins.

- Mishima Industries: This is the industrial side to the Mishima Zaibatsu, the side that produces technology and good, it’s also the side that is responsible for performing experiments, particularly experiments having to do with the Devil Gene. Steve Fox is assumed to be one of such experiments, though it is unknown as of yet what the extent of the experiment he was involved in happens to be. We do know that the Zaibatsu was responsible for his creation and the creation of other characters and beings like Jack-2 and Nancy-MI847J.

- The King of Iron Fist Tournament: It is a martial arts tournament open to the world and sponsored by the Mishima Zaibatsu. It drawn a large crowd, but the intention of the Tournament is to see who will run the Mishima Zaibatsu…and no one who is not a Mishima has ever technically won it. Though as mentioned above, in the multiple scenarios and outcomes certain characters do get their happy endings and they win, in the grand scheme of things it’s mainly a battle between Jinpachi, Heihachi, Kazuya, and Jin with each coming into possession of the Zaibatsu in some point in time.

- G Corperation: G Corp is sort of the rival industry to the Mishima industry known mostly for its bioengineering and for the physicist Jane who created Jack-4 and Jack-5. In Tekken 2 they found Kazuya’s body after Heihachi had thrown him into a volcano, they experimented on him and basically isolated the Devil Gene and they intend to use the Gene to create other genetically enhanced beings. Through a series of events Kazuya comes to rule G Corp from behind the scenes.

- Ogre/True Ogre: They are two of the supernatural beings within the Tekken world and as of Tekken 3 they were final bosses. True Ogre is the real for of Ogre who is known as the God of Fighting. In the central Tekken cannon he appears only in the third game. Apparently he was an Aztec deity, but more than that he was a weapon of war left on Earth by creatures unknown.

- Devil Gene/Mishima Family: The Devil Gene is something of a mystery that’s never fully explored throughout the Tekken series. It is known that the Gene is carried in the Mishima bloodline and that the first known carrier is Jinpachi, Heihachi doesn’t receive the blood, but his son, Kazuya does and so does his grandson Jin. There is also a creature named Azazel, but very little is known about it. It’s basically a Gene that transforms its host into a Devil like creature with incredible power and this Gene exists within the Mishima family. How the Devil Gene is relevant to Asuka has to do with the fact that she comes from the Kazama family line and for some reason they can suppress the Devil, as shown in one of her endings, she was able to suppress Jin’s Devil Gene. It’s never fully explained why this trait exists in the Kazama bloodline, but it does and Asuka and Jun seem to be the exception among their family. Another supernatural being called Angel can also suppress the Devil Gene, but very little is known about Angel and she has yet to appear within the central cannon since Tekken 2.

Events

Asuka makes an appearance in Tekken 5 and in Tekken 6, though while she turns up in other games like Tekken Tag and Street Fighter vs Tekken, these games are not cannon to the central Tekken storyline. Though in terms of characterization I will draw from them sources, but Tekken Tag and Street Fighter vs Tekken are not as story oriented and tend to reveal things about her personality, but there is very little in the way of plot.

So, in Tekken 5 Asuka is introduced as a girl who was taught Kazama style martial art by her father. The Kazama style martial art is a mixed martial art style that employs techniques from akiki-jujitsu, akido, judo, and karate. It is a style that is unique to the Kazama family and is used by Jun, Jin, Asuka, and her father. Before the 5th King of Iron Fists tournament Asuka was a pretty normal girl who went to school and was considered to be a mediator of sorts…or rather a bully to bullies and a peace maker between rival gangs. One of her hobbies is described as vigilantism and she has been described as a gang mediator.

One day Ausaka returned home to find her father’s Dojo trashed and was informed that her father was hospitalized. Lei Wulong, the Hong Kong detective on the case, also told her that the man who did this to her father was Feng Wei, a man who had been traveling around China and Japan destroying Dojos…though why is something of a mystery. After learning only the man’s name and a vague description of him she enters the King of Iron Fist tournament in hopes of encountering the man who hurt her father and settling the score. This drive to find Feng Wei is the main motivator for her in Tekken 5.

Now in Asuka’s Tekken 5 storyline she does find and defeat Feng Wei and from there goes on to fight other opponents, including Jinpachi. She also met Jin Kazama for the first time as well, though she had no idea he was her cousin and she ends up punching him as he trip over her and falls face first into her chest.

The continuum screws itself up between Tekken 5 and 6 as there is a lack of consistency between her storylines as is sometimes the case in the Tekken games. In 6 she doesn’t find Feng Wei at all and the lack of closure eats her up. Her new motivation for entering the tournament is because she uncovers the fact that she and Jin are family and that Jin is stirring up conflict so she wants to defeat him. It isn’t nearly as compelling as her story in Tekken 5 and her drive is somewhat diminished, but she does gain a new rival in Lili Rochefort.

Relationships

- Father: He’s an unnamed man who taught her the Kazama style of martial arts and their relationship is apparently close considering the extreme lengths Asuka went through to get revenge for him.

- Jun: Jin’s mother and Asuka’s aunt.

- Jin: They are cousins, though there is a misconception that they are siblings. This is not the case and as of yet they have no idea they are related.

- Lili: She defeated Lili in the 5th tournament and ever since the two have been rivals.

- Feng Wei: Bitter enemy. He destroyed her father’s dojo and put her father in the hospital. Her main drive in Tekken 5 was getting revenge against this man and in her storyline she defeated him.

- Lei Wulong: He is the detective that told Asuka of Feng Wei.

Personality: [For Asuka I will be drawing examples of her personality from all Tekken related sources, even non-canon sources like Tekken Tag and Street Fighter vs Tekken, in order to give examples of her personality.]

In Tekken Asuka is described as a “nosey kid who likes to fix other people’s problems,” this is her predominate character trait as she has a tendency to throw herself right into the thick of other’s business with only the best of intentions at heart. Granted she seems more willing to butt in where violence is concerned and in her prologue for Tekken 5 she is shown to have beaten up a couple of guys for picking on another kid, or at least that is what one could extrapolate from the image. In her Tekken Tag 2 ending she got in the middle of two rival gangs, intent on fighting one another, in order to break up the fight and get them to play nice. She has been referred to as a gang mediator, evidenced by her attempts at getting rival gangs to get along as opposed to starting a fight and it appears that the gang leaders in her area know her and respect her to some degree. Though it’s more likely that they respect her body more than they respect her.

Asuka has also been described as a vigilante as well and she has no problem with using violence if her messages of peace do not translate to those she is trying to convince. This also extends to personal vengeance as is the case with her father when Feng Wei destroyed his dojo and put him in the hospital. Instead of letting Lei Wulong take care of it, she entered the tournament for herself in order to hunt him down and defeat him for the sake of her father’s honor. As previously explained she will bully people who bully others, not giving it a second thought when it comes to standing up for the little guy.

Asuka is pretty upbeat and chatty once she gets going, she has no problem expressing herself using exaggerated gestures to get her point across or rambling on even if it’s to herself just to fill the silence. When she first encountered Feng Wei she had no idea who he was and given that he’s not a man predisposed to long chats Asuka did most of the talking, pretty much asking him if he knew of a Chinese kenpo fighter, describing how he looked with physical gestures in addition to verbal descriptions. When Feng Wei turned to face her, Asuka didn’t even break stride in her speaking, it was basically a segue right into saying “hey, it’s you!” So she’s a pretty lively speaker, prone to speech making and rambling if given the opportunity which fits perfectly with her boisterous and confident nature.

And yes, Asuka has no shortage of confidence in herself something that is clear in her demeanor, though she doesn’t come off arrogant and is able to acknowledge others in terms of strength including her enemies. After defeating Feng Wei she comments that he’s strong and that she’s not surprised her father had a hard time with him, but in the same vein she says he was still no match for her.

Keeping in line with her lively nature Asuka is also easily riled and moved to anger when just the right buttons are pushed. One of her triggers is selfishness, for example, when Lili’s limousine stopped right in front of her when Asuka was riding her bike to school. Asuka fell off of her bike and her lunch was destroyed as a result, but Lili only seemed concerned with the fact that her own day had been ruined and had no concern at all for Asuka’s lunch or wellbeing. This immediately prompted aggression from Asuka who is often put out by Lili’s selfish and rube mannerisms. She is also easily irritated by anyone who lingers too long on her chest. For example, in Tekken 5, when she is first introduced to Jin, he fell into her bust and while it didn’t seem like a big deal to Jin (who was disoriented) Asuka took it personally and punched him before walking away. She also punched two gang leaders for gawking too closely at her, so she has very little tolerance for overt displays of lewdness, especially without her permission. She also has a short fuse when it comes to those who pick on others who can’t fight back and will immediately insert herself into the situation to give the offenders what for. Finally, lectures, she doesn’t exactly hate them given her tendency for speech, but, but when Cammy and Chun-Li lectured her and Lili, threatening to arrest them, Asuka preferred to settle the matter with fists especially since they were being threatened with physical force anyway.

Finally, Asuka has a clear concern for others, particularly those who deserve it, though to some degree it doesn’t matter. She does go out of her way to interfere in the affairs of street gangs because she would rather see them make nice, but it’s also for the sake of the public at large not to have them fighting out in the open. She was also very concerned for Jin after his fight with Jinpachi. When he passed out she rushed to his side in order to help him even though she wasn’t sure what she should or could even do to help him. So, she is very capable of showing care for and concern for a stranger that she doesn’t even know lending a gentle aspect to her wild, tomboyish nature.

Overall Asuka’s character is motivated by her own sense of justice, whether it is protecting people from bullies, avenging her father, or mediating gangs in order to keep the peace. This loud, plucky gal will always be moved to act on her well-meaning vigilante tendencies.

Upon realizing that she’s been spirited away to the in Between she’ll start off a little confused and annoyed…is she dead? Is she dreaming? These questions will probably plague her at first, but then she will quickly assert herself, making sure everyone knows the injustice of it all. She’ll also take it upon herself to attempt to mediate the gangs on the turtle, because it’s what she does. She may even attempt to school those who are willing to learn in the art of Kazama style martial arts as she is considered to be a master of the art.

Appearance:

Abilities: It’s Tekken so her speed, strength, agility, endurance and other stats are at or even well above the Olympic performance level of human beings. Fighting games tend to defy the basic laws of physics as a girl of her size and weight should not be able to send a full grown man flying and smashing into a rock with a single punch. So her statistics are definitely abnormal or at best superhuman.

She is also very skilled, if not a master of Kazama style martial arts.

Inventory: The clothing on her back and the gear that she’s wearing.

Suite: A suite in the Fire Sector. Two levels is preferable, but whatever is fine, she will probably use one of the levels as a dojo. The fire sector will match her personality the best, which might not necessarily be a good thing, but since it has the highest gang count her gang mediator skills will serve her well in this sector.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person:

In Between life, death, and dreaming.

It didn’t make sense to Asuka…first of all how could you be in Between any of these things? You were either alive, dead, or dreaming…but being in between one or more of these was almost like trying to wrap one’s mind around time travel. She knew she wasn’t dreaming, her head hurt too much so she was definitely lucid and she would deny being dead, being too young, vital, and skilled as a martial artist to die.

Okay, so maybe skill couldn’t prevent one from dying, but she still had too much she needed to do!

Just because she had finally gotten revenge against her father’s attacker didn’t mean her life was over, not even close! There was still that brat Lili to contend with as well, apparently after defeating her in the previous tournament the prissy little rich girl had it out for her. The only good thing she could say was that daddy’s little girl had been reeled in by her old man and she wouldn’t have to see her again. At least she hoped not, but if Lili came looking for another fight and Asuka was nowhere to be found it would almost be like handing over a win. The very idea made her sick, especially since it meant giving something to a spoiled rich girl with no manners who enjoyed looking down on her.

She also had unfinished business with that strange guy who had transformed into a demon of some kind, but became a human again. It was an encounter she’d rather not linger on, but that dumb guy owed her an apology as well…she probably should have twisted his arm instead of knocking him out, but it was all water under the bridge now. Still it would be unresolved if she was dead, and she refused to leave matters unsettled.

So she rejected the idea of death.

The only option left was life, there was no other option that made sense to her, but there was one hole in this…and that was how she got here. She didn’t remember falling into the rabbit hole and having and acid trip. Just trying to think about it caused her aching head to throb all the more and it ended with her growling in frustration and scrubbing her fingers through her already wild hair.

Well, there was no point in getting herself bent out of shape yet, she could always pump the citizens for information and advice just to see what would shake loose. And if all else failed, well, she would just have to go poking around to get what she needed. If they insisted on keeping secrets in this place then she would have to insist on being nosey.

Network:

[The camera does kick on, but it takes a second or two before it focuses on anything substantial.]

[A voice can be heard, however, she’s speaking an odd language that some might recognize as Japanese…but it comes off very spitfire and fast.]

Hontouni atama ni kuru. Nani ga okotte iru shitte shi tai ga korera no hitowatashi tsutaeru koto wo kixyohi!

Aaaa…[there is a contemplative moment of silence before realization hits her]…ha!

[The video finally focuses in on a young woman with short brown hair and wide set brown eyes.]

Did anyone else feel like crap when they came here? So, a side effect of being shanghaied, or what? I’ve never been kidnapped before, though you’d have to have a lot of nerve to kidnap Asuka Kazama so I guess I should give these kedan some kudos for having the stones to do it. Real ballsy since their captive’s can't fight back, though cowardly's probably a better word, but it won’t take long before I'm back in full fighting spirit!

[She doesn’t give herself much room to breathe before making an exaggerated gesture with her hands and arms and moving on to the next subject.]

Speaking of which, they’re not all that friendly are they, some of them are just plain grumpy…like they’re offended you breathe the same air that they do…and they’re pretty short with you too, like they have more important things to do than answer your questions. It makes me feel like a bad smell they’re trying to wave away. [And she’ll make a flapping gesture with her hand.] Speaking of which, I did a little bit of poking around and I hear there are or have been gangs formed in the different sectors. They don’t like you digging into things too much it seems, but I don’t care, I want to know more about these gangs.

[She’s quite the longwinded one isn’t she?]

[Folding her arms over her chest she looks upward thoughtfully.]

Hnnnn…well I guess I should go ahead and put myself out there. I already mentioned my name, I am Asuka Kazama, and I am a master of Kazama style martial arts. If there isn’t already a program set in place that teaches combat I’d be willing to offer my expertise! Self defense is important, especially against bullies and people who thrive off of the suffering of others.

Or if you’re just interested in learning martial arts. Kazama martial arts is a mixed style, just so you know. So if there’s anything I can do in that capacity I’d be glad to help out!

[There’s something else, well there are a ton of questions in her head right now and she taps her chin in wonder.]

Well I guess I’ll ask more if can think of questions, but right now the 411 on things that're happening right now'll do.
